Backpacking: Hickory Creek Wilderness
On October 17-19, 2008, some members of Troop 59 went on a backpacking trip to Hickory Creek.
We hiked a total of twelve miles on our trip. Each scout had to carry their own pack with all their necessary gear for the weekend, including food and water.
We had to hang up our smellables so that no animals could get into them (fortunately, we didn’t have any four- legged visitors).
Our food for the weekend consisted of granola bars, beef jerky, dehydrated beef stew and dehydrated spaghetti. To cook, we had to purify stream water and boil it over a small portable stove. The dehydrated food was actually pretty good.
The weather was harsh and cold, 31 degrees in the morning but we didn’t let it hold us back. We were lost for a little while, but thanks to the leaders, everyone made it out.
